Luke came into my life 6 years ago. My family and I went to an event held in downtown Houma to promote future development. The Terrebonne Parish Animal Shelter was there with one of their longest residents - Luke. This freckled nose pittie sat quietly as he was passed by. My daughter stooped down, Luke licked her on the cheek, and at that moment Luke adopted us. 

Because of our family schedules, Luke spends time in his kennel during the day. So when we are home, I committed to giving him the best life ever. Luke doesn’t like to play much, but he LOVES his morning walks. 

Every morning, Luke gives me his best upward and downward facing dog before I leash him up and head out of the door. 

Truthfully, I don’t always invite these walks. Staying an extra 20 minutes in my bed sometimes feels much more appealing than the morning fog, the Louisiana humidity, or the cold(er) winter mornings. 

But this intentional act of starting the morning being present with Luke has shown me how to slow down, and how powerful our morning routine can be in setting the tone for the day. 

I’ve been a runner for 15 years, so I’m pretty sure I’ve felt the “runner’s high”. I know how much the power of  movement has to shift my mood. 

My Luke walks have taught me something else though. I take every opportunity that I can to walk. You could say that I’ve developed my own walking “practice”.

The act of stepping away for a moment - to bring clarity, peace, (or even help digest my lunch 😜) has shifted my ideas about slowing down. 

That’s what inspired me to create a 7 day mindful walking series centered around intention, purpose, truth, and discipline.
