Health isn’t just muscles and metabolism

I think I am on my soapbox again. 😜

I know that I have been pretty fixated lately on our current views of health. Especially in this mid-life phase, the "wellness" noise can be so influential—and, frankly, overwhelming. But as I learn more every day about how to create a truly balanced life, I can’t unsee how we’ve commodified health in America.

Here is the truth: I haven’t felt this much ease in a long time!

The best part? It hasn’t been about changing much of what I’m doing—it’s simply been about changing my perspective and my approach.

We all want to be strong and capable well into our golden years. That’s a beautiful goal. But instead of finding movement we love, we punish ourselves with "shoulds."

  • Lift heavier.

  • Avoid all alcohol and sugar.

  • Walking isn’t "good enough."

  • Count your macros... blah, blah, blah.

I have expressed in some of my other rants that this has been a struggle for me too. It is so easy to get caught up in the rules. And, those of you who know me well also know I am not the biggest rule breaker ;-) But lately, I’ve been leaning into what actually feels like living.

I still enjoy a good craft beer. I absolutely loved everything about blackberry season this year—including the blackberry crumble and the hand pies. And honestly? I haven’t had the desire to go to the gym lately. Instead, I’ve been loving my yoga practice, Tae Bo, getting my foot back into the running game, and picking up my dumbbells and kettlebells at home. I’m not forcing myself, and I’m not restricting anything. It's a different kind of self trust and wisdom. I’m moving in ways that feel like the way I WANT to and also staying consistent.

(^^^ Billy Blanks... still the man!)

Now, I’m not saying we only move when we "feel" like it. We all know that sometimes mood follows action—that the energy comes after we start. But for that to work without frying your nervous system, the action has to be something you actually love. When you choose movement that feels like play, the "effort" of starting doesn't feel like a punishment.

When health becomes a rigid checklist of optimization, it leads to a life that doesn’t feel like living. We’ve started masking vanity as health—making everything about "looking good at the beach" while our internal systems are screaming for a break.

The Blue Zone Secret: Health as a Byproduct

My mom recently visited Costa Rica and this sparked a discussion on "Blue Zones".

If we look at "Blue Zones"—the places where humans actually live the longest—health isn't a performance; it’s a byproduct of a lifestyle. In these cultures, movement is natural and joyful. So is food. They enjoy bread, wine, and fats, but they eat whole, unprocessed versions. Most importantly, they eat slowly and socially.

One thing we often miss is the value of the Moai. This is an Okinawan term for a "social support group" that stays together for life. In the Blue Zones, you don’t "grind" alone. You belong. This social connection does more for the nervous system than a solo treadmill session ever could.

Ikigai and Your Dharma

While we are busy measuring 150g of protein, cultures like Okinawa are focusing on something much deeper: Ikigai.

Ikigai is your "reason for being." In our yoga practice, we call this Dharma—your soul’s unique path and essential nature. I like to think of Dharma as the calling and Ikigai as the daily practice. Yoga helps us quiet the noise so we can hear our Dharma, and Ikigai gives us the framework to live it.

Life feels less like a struggle and more like a flow. You see joy in small things, place value in connection, and move because it feels good (not to "burn off" the blackberry pies).

The Nervous System Bottom Line

Here is the biggest thing I want you to hear: You can be “fit” and still be UNWELL.

When we treat health like a competitive sport or a checklist, we stay locked in our sympathetic drive (fight or flight). We treat our bodies like machines to be upgraded rather than living systems to be nourished. (song plug ... Trevor Hall "don't want to be machine" [Listen Here] )

Come Play, Rest, and Connect

I want to invite you to step off the "optimization" treadmill. My goal is to create a space where we prioritize the "soft" side of health—where stillness, playful movement, and real community are the foundation, not the afterthought.

There is an opportunity for all of these things right here. Whether you need a slow, rhythmic flow to find your breath or a restorative space to finally let your nervous system settle, I would love for you to join me.
